I had Commencement Two, Electric Boogaloo last night. I think that I forgot to mention it; hell, I nearly forgotten about it altogether. (I requested my tickets on the day of the deadline.) It was...strange. My real commencement was cancelled for the prediction of bad weather in December, so they stuck everyone from Fall 2007 who wanted to try again in with the Masters graduates and played it by ear. It was odd. I was on campus for most of the day, anyway, faffing about and discussing The Situation with my two favorite professors, so I got to see a few of my friends graduate with their normal classes, anyway, but on the whole it was very disjointed. I've been holding down a full time job and looking towards grad school for five months now, I'm kind of past the emotional milestone that commencement is supposed to mean.
On The Situation: after being told that Second Choice is ranked so low that I'd only be employable regionally, anyway, I said fuck it and went with the safety school that's willing to give me hop in circles kind of money and has some pretty damned impressive employment stats for a place that's not even within shouting distance of being ranked. I mean, we're talking successful Ph.D.s finding employment within nine months and tenure track within three to four years kind of successful, so I'll go with it. (And I proved last night that my emotional fragility of the past year has not been entirely situational, since I still managed to have a panic attack and crying jag for no apparent reason at about four in the morning, so maybe doing two cross-country moves in the span of a year is a
bad plan.) Because, yes, ladies and gentlemen, I do still intend to reapply to Mildly Shady Inside Job school in the fall.
Fannishly:
zelda_zee has been writing an
amazing pirates AU for Lost, and you are surely missing out if you are even a casual fan of the show and have not been reading it.
Under the Blood Red Flag (link goes to the latest part, further links there can take you to the beginning). It's Desmond/Sayid and everything that an AU should be.
Only quasi-fannishly: I was planning a road trip to a, uh, certain concert when I was still planning on moving to Florida. And then I was bummed when it briefly looked like I was going to be going to South Carolina, because the closest that the tour was coming was North Carolina, and I am not even joking when I say that I'm spatially retarded, guys. That could not have happened. But now they're going to be at the Ford Center! The first Thursday of the fall semester,
goddamnit.
