Kate doesn’t know why it’s so easy for her to trust relitive strangers. She doesn’t know them. They don’t know her. The way she figures, the closer to are to a person, the easier you make it for them to stick a knife in your side. Distance helps you see things more clearly. Distance keeps you safe.

As she stands in the middle of the ocean, clean now, and looks out at the horizon, feels the cool breeze as it circles the open beach, she breathes in and breathes out. She doesn’t know a thing about this place; where it is, if anyone will come for them, what the hell was out in that jungle, were any of them really safe here. She’s free, at least for now, but unanswered questions are piling up around her.

She thinks of what Jack said; about fear, about letting it in so that you could push it away for good. She bites her bottom lip, hard, and takes another deep breath in while her head echoes: one, two, three, four, five.

When she lets her breath back out, her fears go with it, and her eyes slowly open, allowing her to see things clearly, if only for now.
