Title: What Goes Around Comes Around
Rating: PG
Summary: The current brings everything back. One way or another, everything comes back around.
Disclaimer: I do not own Lost. At all. I wish but alas...
Author's Note: Set post-'Through the Looking Glass'. Kinda/sorta dark.

The current brings everything back. One way or another, everything comes back around.

Claire holds three bags of brown powder she broke out of the middle of a statue of the Virgin Mary in her hands. She had once forced these in Charlie’s face, disgust, revoltion written across her features. But now, she rolls them around in her hands with rapt fascination, watches them turn and shift.

She ponders them at length, wonders why they were so important to Charlie at one point, and, at the same time, understands. Now. There are nights, now, when she thinks that all she will ever feel is pain. Emptiness. Loss. It was never about the drugs, she knows. It was about escaping the pain.

She will never know what drove Charlie to this moment, to the crossroads that would very likely determine a large part of the rest of his life. She would never know what had lead him to see the salvation he was desperately searching for in the bottom of these bags, in the blissful oblivion that they had brought him. She will never know.

The list of things that she will never know about Charlie grows every day, because it is all that she can think about. She can only think of the man that she had been falling in love with, about all of the things that she would never be able to ask him, to do with him, to know about him.

And, about the day when the current would bring him back around as well.

Claire rolls the bags around in her hand, watches the powder shift inside of them, like the sand beneath her feet. There will come a time, very soon, when they will call for her, when it will finally be time to leave this place, and everything in it, behind. To go back and pick up the lives that they had left behind.

She’ll go. But she thinks she’ll take one of these with her. As a reminder. Just in case.

And, about the day when the current would bring him back around as well.

And that just gave this title an entirely different meaning than what I'd first thought of.

All I can say about this is wow. I love these short little ficlets that you do because you pack so much meaning into them. This one definitely did not disappoint. I think Claire's reaction to Charlie's death is something I'm looking very forward to for this next season, and I love fics dealing with it.

Great fic!

Well, thank you. As wordy as I can be, sometimes, some fics just want to be shorter than others, and sometimes it takes a short time to say what needs to be said. I'm glad you thought that it worked, in this case.

I'm interested in seeing how things are for Claire next season too, when she realizes that Charlie is gone. For some reason, now that he's dead, I find myself writing Charlie/Claire more and more.

I'm glad you liked this! ♥ Thanks for reading.

You don't know what you got till it's gone (?). I reckon that this'll be the case for Claire too.

It was amazing to see Claire finally (though much too late) showing some understanding of Charlies drug habit and realising that his addiction was born out of pain. Even more powerful was the hint that Claire would keep some of the heroin (just in case!!) because she has a pain she needs to numb now too.

What I wanted to do with this fic was explore the idea that Charlie's death had made Claire realizing some thing about him that she couldn't understand when he was alive, but that that understanding also caused her a great amount of pain. And maybe she understood it just a little too well now.

Thanks for reading. :)

This was wonderful, and so sad that it took Charlie's death for her to finally understand him and appreciate him. I hope they explore this on the show, perhaps not in this way, but in some way. Claire's character deserves it. But even if they don't, we have fic like yours. Thanks for writing it.

Thank you for your kind words. :) I'm really glad you liked this, because it's sad, rough material. I think things are going to be pretty bad for Claire next season.

I absolutely love your opening paragraph - what an incredible concept to apply to the island! And I applaud your giving Claire some beginning of an understanding about Charlie's addiction.

Well, thank you very much. :) I'm glad you liked this. Thank you for reading.

That was such an amazing fic! It was so small but so jampacked full of angst! I love the details you added into it & the line 'The list of things that she will never know about Charlie grows every day, because it is all that she can think about' is just beautiful I love it. Fantastic fic, I loved the way you described Claire's emotions in it!
P.S - love your Claire icon!

A great insight into Charlie's addiction from Claire - a supreme pity that she didn't have it before his death. But this fic was also an interesting foray into Claire's mind as well I think, in the way she reflects on Charlie and her past interactions with him.

You've got a great use of body language here, drawing similarities between the baggies that Claire is rolling in her hand and the sand beneath her feet. The vision of the tide turning and the current carrying everything back to Claire again is also very emotive - it seems almost like the ocean is forever bringing back memories to her.

Short, sweet, and powerful. Well done.

Thank you. :) The more I think about it, the more interested in Charlie and Claire's relationship I become. I don't understand why that only happened after his death, but maybe, like Claire, it's the only way I could see certain things.

I'm glad you liked this. :) Thank you so much for reading.

"I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye" - Savage Garden

I can understand that. I've been such a rabid Charlie, Claire and C/C fan for so long that it amazes me constantly now that so many other people are now joining the ranks after his death. It's mind boggling.

Thank you for writing it! It was an absolute pleasure to read.

And on a random, completely unrelated note: I made your icon! Whoo!

I've got one more C/C story in the works but by no means do I think it's going to be the last. I think that Charlie's death has made a lot of people give him a second look (myself included) and become interested.

Thank you for writing it! It was an absolute pleasure to read.

You're welcome, and really? That's cool! I love it. ♥

Ooh another C/C? Excellent! I've been so starved of fic lately because I haven't been writing much so getting to read new stuff should hopefully keep kicking my muse until she makes a bit more of an effort to get back into things again becaues I'm ultimately aiming for a double centennial of fics (yes I'm crazy).

I did ^_^ yay I feel all proud now! I really like that one, it's one of my favourite icons.

I have to type it up (yes, I write long-hand more often than not) and edit it, and since I have school it may be a few more days, but it's one it's way, I promise. :)

Oh my gosh! Another writer who does long hand first! *shakes your hand*

Well I can't wait to read your next fic m'dear. Happy writing!

Hee. Glad you to know I'm not the only one. ;) And thanks.

This was heartbreaking. Totally, and beautifully written. I'm getting very invested in Claire lately, and her tragedy always moves me, but this is perfect, so beautiful!

I love the idea of the current bringing the virgin back.

"And, about the day when the current would bring him back around as well."

"Claire rolls the bags around in her hand, watches the powder shift inside of them, like the sand beneath her feet."

I love those two lines. This was amazing!
