Three days and he already had a reputation. No one knew each other's names, but everybody knew his. There was a general murmur of 'Steer clear' and 'Try not to piss him off', but Claire had never paid attention to those kinds of things before, so she refused to now.
People weren't that easy, she knew. Thomas had been the sweetest, gentlest boy she had known. He was quiet and meek and, it turned out, a coward. First impressions. They were, so often, dead wrong.
So, when he approached her later that day, she had looked up at him patiently, with kind eyes and a gentle smile. He didn't scare her. She didn’t really understand why he scared anyone, even as he practically threw the wallets at her and almost ran off. It didn’t matter.
He may have had a reputation, but the fact that he had come to her at all meant a whole hell of a lot more to her than that.
