When sun was very little she had seen her father beat a man. She was not supposed to see. It had been an accident. But she stood, fixed in place, as her father’s fists landed against the man’s jaw over and over, until he finally collapsed.

His hands were forever stained crimson. When he held her, she felt the blood on her clothes, on her skin.

As she grew up, the memory would resurface from time to time. Whenever her father raised his voice she would remember. When he had learned of her plans to attend college instead of marrying, she saw the familiar, sickening look lurking behind his eyes.

When Sun was a young woman, she saw the hands of the man she loved, the man that she had married, covered in blood. When she had demanded to know what he had done, she saw it in his eyes. She saw the her father reflected back at her, hiding behind Jin’s eyes.

She refused to let him touch her. She backed away, fast as was possible. What had her father done? What had he done with the man she had fallen in love with? Where had he gone? When was he coming back?
